An obvious trend in adult education must easily be online learning. Being new to the idea of becoming an instructor for adult education, in the process of learning myself, grants an interesting perspective. Learning how to learn again! Having not taken a class for over 20 years, things have definitely changed. I think a lot of how I previously learned fell into the Behaviorist mentality. “human actions are the result of prior conditioning and the way in which a person’s external environment is arranged. Emotions, feelings, intellect and so on are the means by which humans rationalize their responses to environmental stimuli” (Merriam & Brockett, 1997). With the advent of technology and social factors like Covid, online learning has become a more individual process. Social isolation removed the need for classrooms or physical interaction. As an educator, knowledge of how to teach via an online instruction is now an absolute necessity. The presentation of subject materials is much more self driven. I think it has created a generation of more Humanistic learning. Understanding this learning theory will also benefit how students will learn now and in the future.
“The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change.”
